The SCCBA is dedicated to supporting the local legal community and administers or supports many programs that benefit your practice and profession.

Barristers' Leadership Program

Sponsored by the Barristers' Committee.

Bay Area Minority Scholarship Program

High School Mock Trial Tournament

One of our most successful law related education programs.  The State Tournament will be held here in San Jose for the second time in four years in March.  Our ability to administer this program is solely derived from membership dues.

Professionalism Committee

The SCCBA Code of Professionalism, which was implemented over 20 years ago, is widely recognized in the state and nationally as one of the best bar association codes of ethics.  The State Bar modeled a state wide code on ours several years ago; last year at the ABA Annual Meeting our code was highlighted during a session on professionalism.  In addition, our Professional Committee reviews every formal ethics opinion proposed by the State Bar and when appropriate submits comments, comments which have been often utilized in revising the proposed opinion before being published.  This is a significant benefit to practicing attorneys to have the local bar reviewing these opinions and have an impact on their content.  Again, our ability to do this is dependent on membership dues.

Judiciary Committee

As you know, the SCCBA has long been involved in reviewing and rating judicial candidates for governors.  The Judiciary Committee has been well respected and heavily relied on by governors for decades and our process is one that a number of judicial appointment secretaries have touted as a model. The work of this Committee has a significant impact on attorneys in our County.  The Committee does not generate income and relies on membership dues to support it.

Fair Election Practices Commission

The SCCBA has had a long tradition of trying to ensure that contested election for judges are conducted with the dignity and integrity deserving of the judicial office.  The SCCBA has the oldest formed and functioning Fair Judicial Election Practices Commission and Judicial Campaign Code of Ethics in the nation.  It was established nearly 40 years ago under Judge Alden Danner when he was President of the SCCBA.  Our Commission and Code was used as a model for other bar associations in the state by the Supreme Court’s Task Force on Judicial Elections a few years ago.  The National Center of State Courts has also used our Commission and Code as a national model and we are highlighted on the homepage of their non-profit organization established a few years ago for the sole purpose of assisting states and local bars, supreme courts and independent groups in establishing judicial election oversight.
