Career Advancement, Work-Life-Balance, and the Realities of Being a Woman Lawyer in the 21st Century

We are proud to present our Eighth Annual SCCBA Women’s Lawyer Symposium: Celebrating the 100th Year of Women’s Suffrage.

Plenary Session

This year we are excited to kick off the event with Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson. Senator Jackson will speak on the significance of the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage and intersectionality of legislation to improve conditions for women and particularly, women of color, and commentary on California Labor Code Section 432.3. She will answer questions from our Symposium co-chair, Lori Costanzo.

Round Table Discussions

As always, our program will include a distinguished group of women lawyers leading small, round table discussion groups about current issues facing female attorneys: bias in mediation, growing your practice and career through marketing your brand, and civic engagement.

Bias in Mediation:  Judge Jamie Jacobs May will facilitate this breakout session. How do cognitive biases, emotions, and our stress levels resulting from the pandemic and other crises, get in the way of sound decision-making in a mediation?  This program will explore the effects of these mental and emotional processes on decision-making and develop strategies to maximize our ability to make decisions that are sound and are in our best interests.

Grow Your Practice and Career Through Marketing Your Brand:  Katy Goshtasbi, Owner and Founder of Puris Consulting will lead this breakout session. You want a successful business/career that flourishes while having enough time and energy in your day to enjoy life (both at work and home) freely and with less stress. You deserve to have high self-confidence to speak up and sell yourself gracefully and get paid your full value regularly. That's why you need an effective brand to stand out from the crowd effortlessly and intentionally so you can attract attention, promotions and/or the ideal client who'll love and appreciate what you have to offer them. Happiness and practice growth are possible even in times of change and/or crisis, so let's put the focus on your success as a professional woman lawyer.

Civic Engagement: Ann Ravel, Candidate for State Senate District 15, will lead a discussion on civic engagement: How can women be more civically  engaged; and the challenges faced by women running for office. What women can do to make the changes in society that are needed given the outpouring of support for Black Lives Matter protests and the acknowledgement of systemic racism and economic inequality in our country and state.
