Career Advancement, Work-Life-Balance, and the Realities of Being a Woman Lawyer in the 21st Century

An MCLE Round-Table Discussion presented by the SCCBA Women Lawyers' Section, California Women Lawyers, Pillsbury, Winthrop, Shaw & Pittman, LLP, and The CLUB Silicon Valley.

We are proud to present our Fourth Annual SCCBA Lean-In Program. This year we are excited to welcome our keynote speaker, Ann Ravel, back to California. Ann is currently a Commissioner on the Federal Election Commission, after being nominated by President Barack Obama and unanimously confirmed by the Senate. She was previously appointed by Governor Brown as Chair of California’s Fair Political Action Commission, and worked as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Department of Justice, Civil Division, as well as County Counsel for the County of Santa Clara.

As always, our program will also include a distinguished group of women lawyers, from small to large firms, in-house counsel, and women on the bench—in small, round table discussion groups about issues facing women attorneys in the 21st Century: equal pay, generating business, bullying in the profession, success and barriers to gender diversity, and the importance of risk taking in assessing career/job change and progression.

We are excited to welcome Joelle Emerson, CEO of Paradigm, which helps technology companies such as Pinterest create comprehensive diversity programs, and Rachel Michelin, CEO of California Woman Lead, which provides support to women seeking elected and appointed political office. Distinguished judges, the Hon. Julia Alloggiamento, the Hon. Carol Overton, and the Hon. Beth Labson Freeman, will participate in our program, and Anne Martin, our resident lawyer-turned-reinvention strategist, will lead the group about job and career change.

We will make every effort to match participants with discussion groups focused on issues relevant to them. Space is limited this year, so register early! When registering, please indicate if you are interested in:

  • Work Life Balance
  • How to Deal with a Legal Bully
  • Barriers and Success in Promoting Gender Diversity
  • Career/Job Change:  Mastering the Pivot
  • Gender Pay Issues/Generating Business
