What Every Attorney Needs to Know About Insurance Coverage, including Optimizing Your Opportunity for Collecting a Judgment from a Defendant's Insurer

The seminar will provide a course on the basics of interpreting liability policies, tendering claims, responding to denials, obtaining payment on legal fees from insurers, malpractice insurance issues, collecting judgments from insurers, and the many other insurance coverage issues relating to claims and lawsuits against policyholders. The seminar assumes no extensive background in insurance coverage matters. The seminar will also focus on maximizing a plaintiff's ability to collect a judgment (and help move a case to settlement) by understanding coverage issues.

Randy M. Hess - Speaker
Randy M. Hess is a shareholder with Adleson, Hess & Kelly, PC in Campbell, where his practice focuses on representing policyholders in insurance coverage and bad faith disputes. His clients include Fortune 100 companies, governmental entities, individuals and nonprofits. Mr. Hess has successfully represented insured in both California state and federal trial courts and courts of appeal, including the California Supreme Court and the Ninth Circuit. He has also been retained as an expert by insurers, law firms, and policyholders on coverage issues and professional liability matters. Mr. Hess has written articles on insurance coverage for numerous publications. He is also a contributing author to CEB's California Automobile Insurance Law Guide and to How Insurance Companies Settle Cases (James & Co.), and he has written articles for, and been featured in, the Daily Journal and Recorder legal newspapers. He has lectured on new developments in insurance issues and has provided continuing education to defense counsel, employment and technology law firms, lenders, mortgage brokers, technology companies, corporate counsel, insurance agents and brokers, and attorneys. Mr. Hess is a member of the Santa Clara County Bar Association Insurance Committee and previously served as its chair. He recently obtained for his clients one of the highest punitive damage awards in a bad faith action against an insurer in San Mateo County Superior Court history. He has been selected for numerous years as one of Silicon Valley's Best Lawyers by San Jose Magazine and as one of Northern California's "Super Lawyers" in insurance by San Francisco Magazine, and is also currently listed in "Best Lawyers in America" for insurance coverage. Mr. Hess received his J.D. in 1979 from the University of Santa Clara School of Law and is admitted to practice before all state and federal courts in California and before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Quentin Mommaerts - Speaker
Quentin F. Mommaerts is a solo practitioner in Santa Clara County. He has focused his practice on the representation of insureds in disputes with insurers for over 12 years. His insurance coverage practice has included both first and third party claims under a wide variety of coverages including motor vehicle, homeowners, personal umbrella, business, commercial umbrella, malpractice, employment practices and D & O policies. Before that he was an insurance defense attorney for 16 years representing insureds in tort claims.

Dean A. Pappas - Speaker
Dean A. Pappas is a partner in the Redwood City office of Ropers, Majeski, Kohn & Bentley. His practice is devoted to providing assistance to insurance companies in the analysis of property and liability insurance coverage issues and assistance in the investigation and handling of insurance claims. He also represents insurers in mediation, arbitration, and litigation concerning insurance contract or extra-contractual claims.

Mr. Pappas is a frequent speaker at seminars regarding insurance coverage and claim handling. He has served as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Santa Clara County Bar Association Insurance Law Section from time to time as duty calls and is an update author for California Liability Insurance Practice: Claims & Litigation published by the CEB.
